If there is a lesson to be learnt from the 2023 elections, it would be this; Nigerians are tired of broken political promises. The voting pattern reflected the rousingly resonating rhythm of rejection resulting in the disdainful divorce of delinquent politicians. Nigerians through the demonstrative dissertation of their democratic will, served distasteful disserts to deceitfully desperate demagogues, despatching to desolate dungeons those that did not deliver.
It is glaring that prevarication in public office and anything short of a starling performance by persons in possession of the privileged mandate of the people will precipitate another electoral night of long knives.
Notice has been served to all politicians, that in 2023, poor performance will be prohibitively penalised.
Perhaps no institution carries this burden of expectation as heavily as the 10th National Assembly of the Federal Republic. Recording the most diverse partisan representation in the history of the nation,( which is reflective of the demands good governance), distinguished Senators must now appreciate and adequately prepare for the enormous national assignment ahead.
Towards this end, the appropriate first step would be to elect the right kind of leadership. The kind of Senate President that must reflect the mood of the nation, assuage the demand for equity and at the same time, produce an individual that posses the skills of an excellent team player. Those skills include; humility in recognising that he is only the first amongst equals, the temperament to harmonise complex and conflicting contributions, the capacity to connect with other arms of government and the capability to confidently and consistently procure to optimal contentment, the welfare and wellbeing of legislative stakeholders.
