




Umuobasiukwu Village Square, Ozuitem in Bende LGA of Abia State was agog on Tuesday, September 6, 2023 as the people celebrated their New Yam Festival or ‘Ike ji’ with unprecedented pomp. The Special Guest of Honour and Chief Whip of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (MON) was ably represented by his Media Aide/Spokesperson, Dr. Maduka Okoro, an indigene of Umuobasiukwu and illustrious son of Ozuitem.
In his speech, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu congratulated HRM Eze John O. Akaliro, the Obasi Ukwu 11 of Umuobasi autonomous community and the entire people of Ozuitem on the joyous occasion.
He described the New Yam Festival as an integral part of Igbo culture, which unites the people and reminds them of their descent. He pointed out that culture is the mother of religion adding that culture defines a people. He said that anyone who forgets his culture forgets his root and identity. He commended them for sustaining the New Yam Festival in Ozuitem over the years and enjoined Ndigbo to uphold their culture despite the influence of Westernization or Christianity stressing that there is nothing fetish about it. He described HRM Eze Akaliro as a loving father and quintessential traditional ruler. He wished him many more years on throne in good health and uncommon oomph.
Dr. Maduka Okoro assured his people that he would do his utmost to ensure that they receive whatever is due to them from his boss, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu within the shortest possible time. His speech attracted resounding ovation. The people were so happy and full of praises for Senator Orji Uzor Kalu who they said had done them proud. The celebration was a huge success.
The attendance was unprecedented despite the downpour and unavoidable absence of HRM Eze John Akaliro. The ceremony climaxed with the popular Okoro Dance and the mammoth crowd danced the night away to the fast rhythmic beat of the Ikoro to the delight of all and sundry.
